I’m not even supposed to be here today!!

by Urgo on January 3, 2003

Ever have those days that you wish you called in sick, but actually don’t mind that you hadn’t, but really should have? That was my day today.
Today was the day of the first storm of 2003 in Massachusetts. I woke up a little late this morning but still managed to get everything done and out pretty much on time. After a quick check of the “is UMass closed” page I headed out, and got out of my driveway without much of a problem. The trek through my hometown towards Amherst went pretty well until about halfway there. My windshield got really dirty, I ran out of windshield wiper fluid, and even when I had some it barely did anything since my wiper was broken.
I stopped at a mobile station and used the window washing equipment they have there and made it the rest of the way to UMass uneventfully, ending up only about 5 minutes late.
Around 11am the helpdesk where I work at was alerted that UMass was officially closing at 3pm that day, so we of course closed then and left… JUST KIDDING. Yeah anyway, we finished up a little before three and prepared for the drive ahead of us. I was determined to do something about my windshield so I asked around at the helpdesk for places to get wipers and Wal-Mart was suggested.
So at 3 I walked up the hill to my car, brushed it off, and began my trip to Wal-Mart. I picked the popular roads since I thought (for the most part correctly) that they would be plowed and it ended up taking about 25 minutes to get from UMass to big y where I stopped in to see if Don was working. Since he wasn’t it was another 15 minutes before I made it to Wal-Mart. This drive from UMass to Wal-Mart normally would have taken about 10 minutes, so you can already see the slowness of the snow and stop-and-go traffic.
I walk into Wal-Mart and make my way to the automotive section, and after matching my wiper to the ones in the store for a few minutes I find that they do not carry my size. Some other lady was in the isle as well looking for a snow scraper so I asked her if she knew of any other place that sold wipers that was near by, and she suggested the automotive shop in the big y plaza!! I wish I had known of this before hand as I would have saved a bit of time.
I left Wal-Mart, reassembled the wiper I brought into Wal-Mart and headed over to the big y plaza again, 10 minutes. I walked into the auto store and all three of the sales people were on the phone! After announcing that the “Big Mall” would be closing at 5 and that they were going to close they punched my car into the computer and I got the correct wiper for it. I also picked up a jug of wiper fluid since I was out. I get out, put the wiper on, fill up the fluid reserve, and I’m off.
INTERMISSION.
Go take a break. I bet you could use a nice cold, well actually hot drink right about now so take a break as this story is so long!
INTERMISSION.
Right, so it

WOw, well..my roomate was trying to go up the hill (driveway) at the Ranch (My house) and he redlined his engine..he drives a stick shift…well..turns out the engine is busted and it’s going to cost him 3,000 to replace it..he’s getting a new car…the snow..on my window caused the crack in my windshield to increase to the other side of the window, so my windshield has a line running through it from the drivers side to the passenger side this is a crack..caused by snow…I can’t get out of my driveway… it’s rough šŸ™‚ but with shoveling and plowing it’ll be ok…

I had a fun ride home though I got sort of lost. The Notch on 116 was closed off and there was a cop there making everyone turn around. I tried the route following Rt 9, but I had absolutely no idea where I was going. I ended up turning around and heading back to take Rt 47. Low-and-behold, the Notch had been re-opened so up I go! šŸ™‚ I got hope at the same time as I would have had we left at 5. (I, too, stopped at Walmart. I picked up a snow brush. :-D)

Elliott:
I got home later then if we left at 5. Did you see the lady I talked to since she too was looking for a snow brush? šŸ™‚
And wow, funny that they closed and reopened the notch. šŸ™‚
Chris: doh that sucks about your friends car. I hope I didn’t over stress my car trying to get up the hill.
