New Year New Server

by Urgo on January 6, 2004

I hope everyone had a good xmas/new years. I know I did. It has been a while since my last post, and other then the holidays the other major thing that happened was that I finished college! Yay! Still waiting for all of my grades to come in, but I’m sure I did graduate…. Now just to find a job. Anyone want to hire me as a Network Security Consultant? 😛
Anyway, the big news right now is that all services that are running on this system (urgo.org, tveps.net, dotget.org, etc) will be moving over to a new system Thursday January 8th. The Shire is going to be conquering Mordor and will be occupying the land he he he.
What this means is sometime Thursday afternoon all data will be transfered from Mordor and put on to Shire. After the move-over is complete Mordor will go down and all dns entries will be updated to point to Shire. I was actually thinking of just switching the network cards in the two computers so the IP will stay the same… but we’ll see what happens on that day.
Anyway, to anyone hosting domains on urgo.org or using it for email, expect an outage sometime Thursday. Hopefully everything will move over without too much complications and I’ll have the server back up and running quickly. I’ll make sure I post an update here as soon as everything is switched over.
Tech Note: Just to give you an idea of why I am doing this update let me share with you the computers specs:
Mordor: P 200, 64 megs ram, 16 gig hdd. — can not upgrade anything (except hdd)
Shire: P2 450, 256 megs ram, 20 gig hdd (+ 16, mordors hdd maybe). Much faster system and is upgradable (at least the ram and hdd)
Mordor currently uses about double the amount of physical memory it has so it is constantly swaping data in and out casuing slowdown. The upgrade will give it a lot more breating room. I am also changing the operating system from Redhat 7.2 (old and no more updates) to Gentoo (a much more suitable OS).
Side note: After/during upgrades I’m going to be going to a gentoo presentation at MIT.
