On January 8th of the Third Age (2004) Shire and Mordor
went to battle and Shire came out victorious! Welcome
to the new urgo.org server, shire.urgo.org. Enjoy your
stay.

- Urgo

So as you can see the new server is up and running although not all set up yet. Most things have been migrated over, but not everything is configured perfectly yet.

On this move I decided to go from POP3 (I didn't use it both other people did) and /var/spool/mail mbox format to IMAP-SSL .maildir format. This is one of the big things I've been battling with over the past half week. At first postfix was being a pain and not accepting mail, but after I figured out how to match up my old sendmail configurations with postfix it seems to work fine now.

The next big thing I decided to do to the mail accounts was set up Spam Assassin to block incoming spam. This is what I'm currently working on right now, and as thankfully I do not get too much spam that is actually hurting me as it takes so long to see if anything I change affects the system in a positive way. I'm still not currently sure if a spam message gets moved over properly. Anyone that uses my system for mail I am watching the mail logs closely so I'll try very hard to make sure you do not loose any mail.

Okay, well thats enough for today. Please if anyone notices a problem get in contact with me ASAP so I can remedy it. :) I'll leave you a slightly edited picture of what the new server, Shire, looks like. GENTOO POWERED!

New Year New Server

I hope everyone had a good xmas/new years. I know I did. It has been a while since my last post, and other then the holidays the other major thing that happened was that I finished college! Yay! Still waiting for all of my grades to come in, but I'm sure I did graduate.... Now just to find a job. Anyone want to hire me as a Network Security Consultant? :P

Anyway, the big news right now is that all services that are running on this system (urgo.org, tveps.net, dotget.org, etc) will be moving over to a new system Thursday January 8th. The Shire is going to be conquering Mordor and will be occupying the land he he he.

What this means is sometime Thursday afternoon all data will be transfered from Mordor and put on to Shire. After the move-over is complete Mordor will go down and all dns entries will be updated to point to Shire. I was actually thinking of just switching the network cards in the two computers so the IP will stay the same... but we'll see what happens on that day.

Anyway, to anyone hosting domains on urgo.org or using it for email, expect an outage sometime Thursday. Hopefully everything will move over without too much complications and I'll have the server back up and running quickly. I'll make sure I post an update here as soon as everything is switched over.

Tech Note: Just to give you an idea of why I am doing this update let me share with you the computers specs:
Mordor: P 200, 64 megs ram, 16 gig hdd. -- can not upgrade anything (except hdd)
Shire: P2 450, 256 megs ram, 20 gig hdd (+ 16, mordors hdd maybe). Much faster system and is upgradable (at least the ram and hdd)

Mordor currently uses about double the amount of physical memory it has so it is constantly swaping data in and out casuing slowdown. The upgrade will give it a lot more breating room. I am also changing the operating system from Redhat 7.2 (old and no more updates) to Gentoo (a much more suitable OS).

Side note: After/during upgrades I'm going to be going to a gentoo presentation at MIT.
