UPSes Suck! (Urgo’s YTO 107 Day 259)
Today the latest UPS that I bought… a little over a year ago? died on me… and this wasn’t the first one that did as yo see I sort of have a UPS graveyard and that isn’t even counting the ones I’ve had when in MA or VA that I got rid of.
Anyway if you’re not familiar with a UPS I’m not talking about the shipping company I’m talking about an Uninterruptible power supply. A UPS is used so you can plug your computer into it and if the power goes out it will keep your stuff running on a battery until the power goes out or the battery dies (which usually is around 5 mins to an hour depending on what type you get and how much you have plugged in to it).
The problem with these is though is that the battery’s all die even if you aren’t using them!! These units cost $100-$200 or so (for the powerful ones) to buy but only last a year or two……. I think I’ve now given up on them and I’ll just deal with my computers turning off on me. Sure I’ll be pissed off if I loose stuff that I have open but I can’t just keep throwing money at these things and have them keep dying…. maybe I’ll give this one one last shot if I can get a replacement battery for cheap or fix it somehow but who knows.
Do you use a UPS? If so what brand? I’ve tried a bunch of brands and none really work very well for long. If you don’t use a UPS I hope you at least use a surge protector for your tech 🙂
